Yunus regime-critic ex-secy Abu Alam Shahid Khan arrested: Who is next?

Yet another outspoken critic of the mobocracy, corruption and fascism of the Yunus regime has been silenced: detectives have arrested former secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan for supporting the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War and upholding the Constitutionโ€”an act deemed anti-state by the regime.

Earlier, 16 pro-liberation activists, including academicians and journalists, were arrested after they came under a mob attack for joining a discussion of the Moncho-71 platform on August 28 and were later implicated in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on charges of conspiring to overthrow the Jamaat-controlled interim government.

They were denied bail the following day, even though the case statements were false and fictitious. Now, Shahid Khan is arrested as he went to the Dhaka Reporters Unity to listen to the discussion.

The discussion began around 11am, and before the Jamaat-led mob attacked the venue to foil the event, only Dhaka University Law Professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman (Curzon) spoke. Other guests present at the event included freedom fighter and expelled Awami League leader Abdul Latif Siddiqui, while senior journalist Monjurul Alam Panna was among the audience along with Shahid Khan.

The former secretary has always been vocal about preserving the spirit of the Liberation War and thus spoken against the Jamaat-Shibir and pro-Pakistani elements in TV talk shows and YouTube interviews. He occasionally writes op-eds for newspapers.

Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police picked him up around 2:30am on Monday and produced him in court in the afternoon with a prayer to keep him in jail until the investigation is completed.

Earlier, the detectives arrested Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah and Prof Abul Barkat in politically motivated corruption cases, which created massive criticism.
